The Vida Matjan School of Kotor for Primary and Secondary Music Education enjoys the status of an institution that for more than seven decades has, on the one hand, implemented the fundamental values of national and world music culture it has inherited, while, on the other hand, continued to modernize and improve the teaching process. Today’s teachers and associates successfully continue the tradition of their predecessors and contribute to the development of the institution with their daily commitment and effort, while the school’s students are regularly honored with awards at national and international competitions and festivals. The school educates students in the departments for piano, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, violin, cello, guitar, accordion, and vocal arts, all situated in a magnificent building in the Kotor Old Town, as well as through its regional departments in Risan, Radanovići, and Lastva Grbaljska. Since 2007, the school has proudly born the name of the composer Vida Matjan, the founder and first director of the school, who constantly strived for innovation in making the school a second home for many children with pronounced musical talent. Thus, children’s interest in music education has been fostered and developed continuously, inspiring many students to play music professionally after finishing their studies, while still more have remained in the sphere of music as committed amateurs – as members of city and church choirs, members of City Music, etc.
